Do you use this technique?

Diagramming sentences. Ugh, right? I can remember having to do that in English class. I didn’t know why diagramming sentences was important then. Well, times have changed. I try to diagram sentences now for a number of reasons. If I am having trouble with a sentence, diagramming it helps me to sort out the various sentence parts and their relationship to one another.

Sentence diagrams help with verb agreement. If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural as well. Sometimes that is easier said than done.

Apparently, diagramming sentences (along with quite a number of other skills) is no longer taught in schools. That’s too bad. I read a statement from a top business executive to the effect that in his daily business decision-making processesĀ he still uses the critical thinking skills learned by diagramming sentences .

Do you diagram sentences? Has it helped you in other ways besides the art of writing?

I’d love to hear from you. Tell me about your sentence diagramming experiences. What English language elements give you problems?
